We are partnering with Olin to fix this.

24%

We are partnering with Olin's administration and are optimistic about future progress. Check back for updates. The policy demands below will update as they are completed, or as we find alternate solutions.

October 1, 2019

We published an open letter in Olin College's school newspaper, Frankly Speaking.

Over the course of the past year, many transgender students at Olin have been actively threatened and harassed. When this was brought to the attention of Olin’s administration, those students were ignored. As trans students, alumni, and allies, we felt we could no longer trust that the Olin administration would stand by us and keep us safe, so we wrote to discuss what needed to change in order for trans people to exist in this community. We hoped our article would lead to productive, honest communication and meaningful action to protect those of us who are trans. We came here to learn, and we were deeply disappointed that Olin failed to prevent multiple forms of violence against us that have obstructed our education, in some cases to the point of impasse. We truly love this institution, and we want to be safe here. We are ending our long silence because we urgently need action.

You can read our full policy demands below. Please sign our support form if you believe transgender students deserve to exist safely at Olin.

We, trans students, alumni, faculty and staff of Olin College and our allies, demand:

  1. An accountable Title IX process that can withstand changes in administration.
  2. Fully independent investigations into what has transpired so far, including into violence against trans students and the mishandling of our case.
  3. Comprehensive education that prevents future harassment.
  4. Clear statements of values. Our College must take a stand on transphobic violence on campus.
  5. Significant improvements to daily life for transgender students, so we can begin to heal.
  6. A prompt response to these demands. We also expect complete cessation of retaliation against us for submitting reports or describing our experiences. We ask for a substantive response within two weeks.

Full Demands

  1. Create an accountable Title IX process that can withstand changes in administration.

    Back to Overview

    1. Olin will appoint a new Title IX Coordinator who does not hold any role in Student Affairs, so that students can report Title IX cases without having their experiences suppressed or experiencing retaliation by administrators like the Title IX Coordinator.
    2. Olin must also hire a Deputy Title IX Coordinator role, so that when the Title IX Coordinator changes roles, the Title IX process remains independent of Student Affairs
    3. The College will stop ignoring Title IX reports of retaliation by Olin as an institution, particularly when that “retaliation” might be accidental and a result of the arguably reasonable frustration of an administrator acting in a role that is secondary to their job.
    4. Olin will provide external legal representation for students who file Title IX complaints so that those students have a consistent presence and advocate in navigating the necessarily changing shape of the process at a small institution like Olin.
    5. Olin will remove the gag order on Title IX complainants’ advisors during hearings, so victims can be protected and reduce the retraumatization of reliving violence.
    6. Olin’s administration will create and enforce a thorough harassment policy, independent of Student Affairs, that preserves accountability—so that if this happens again, students have a clear path to safety and justice.
    7. Faculty and staff must all be required to sign the honor code, so they can be held accountable for their actions.
  2. Initiate fully independent investigations into what has transpired so far, including into violence against trans students and the mishandling of our case.

    Back to Overview

    1. Olin must stop ignoring reports of emotional and physical violence against trans students on campus.
    2. Olin must stop ignoring Title IX reports of retaliation by Olin as an institution (or individual administrators) and refer existing reports for independent investigation.
    3. Olin must not allow any administrator to direct a Title IX investigation against themself.
    4. Staff members that endanger the health and safety of trans or other marginalized students by threats of violence or other actions that are otherwise unbecoming of their position will be fired.
  3. Begin providing comprehensive education that prevents future harassment.

    Back to Overview

    1. We demand thorough education and trainings about trans people and other marginalized groups, so that the community is informed. This means including training every semester for students, faculty, staff and external partners.
    2. Olin will provide trainings about how to spot TERF rhetoric for students, faculty and staff so that we are informed and can make healthy choices about our own beliefs.
    3. Olin must include curriculum with explicit focus on LGBT history, including in OFYI (the Olin First-Year Introduction).
      • We will be working with Adva Waranyuwat, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and OFYI Professor, to make these changes. We are grateful for her responsiveness, and for her kind message.
    4. Olin will provide sexual wellness education that is relevant to trans students, including nonbinary students, students who take gender-affirming hormones, and students who pursue gender-affirming surgeries.
    5. Olin’s library will provide queer resources, and help students find them.
    6. Olin will provide a trans support group with an external, adult trans person.
    7. Any form of education which focuses on trans or LGBT issues must be offered to student volunteers of the relevant groups for review prior to being made public. This is to ensure that education offered by Olin is accurately representative of the issues faced by the group. Those students must have the option to remain anonymous.
  4. Make clear statements of values. Our College must take a stand on transphobic violence on campus.

    Back to Overview

    1. We demand that Olin publicly condemn all radicalized hate groups and ideologies including TERF ideology. By failing to take this stand and remaining neutral on a violent extremist hate group currently present on this campus, Olin is complicit in our harassment.
      • On October 8, 2019, President Richard Miller shared a letter with the Olin community that condemns hate and harassment at Olin. We appreciate his letter, and the meaningful action it calls for. We will continue to support that change.
    2. Olin will expel students who endanger the health and safety of trans or other marginalized students by threatening violence. While these acts are being investigated, such students should be removed from campus.
    3. Olin will make acts/reports of violence against trans students public in the form of community safety warnings, so the community is aware of present danger.
    4. All non-Olin student resources must be informed of Olin’s stance on transphobia, and should be expected to train their staff accordingly. This includes Babson Public Safety, Colony Care, Babson Health, and all other student resources.
    5. Marginalized students (including students marginalized because of their gender, race, ethnicity or disability) will be explicitly protected in the Honor Code, as part of the Respect for Others clause.
      • Olin held an Honor Code Town Hall on October 4, 2019. The student body voted to approve our proposal to add identity to the "Respect for Others" clause and protect students from discrimination based on protected characteristics (including gender identity). Trans students, along with other marginalized groups, are now protected by the Honor Code.
    6. Admissions and other departments that interact with prospective students should set clear expectations of their values, and should not allow student employees to share hate speech with prospective students.
    7. All student workers and paid student researchers at Olin should be banned from using hate speech at work, and should be fired if they use their position to spread transphobic propaganda, harass or threaten other students.
  5. Take steps to make significant improvements to daily life for transgender students, so we can begin to heal.

    Back to Overview

    1. Administrative Resources
      1. Olin will report trans and nonbinary students in the correct categorization in any and all publications of the relevant student demographics.
      2. Olin must simplify the name change process. It should require talking to a maximum of one administrator. While we were promised that change last year, the current implementation sometimes requires weeks of follow-up meetings with different departments, and that burden cannot be placed on students. Telling us that we can contact every department individually is not enough, especially because cisgender students are not typically expected to do so. The name/email change form should be openly broadcasted and provided for Oliners, even before arriving at Olin.
      3. Pronouns and preferred names will be in every class registry available to the professors. Telling us that we can contact every professor individually or email an administrator to do that every semester is not enough.
    2. Health Resources
      1. We demand gender-neutral bathrooms that are convenient to access from every place on campus. This means all floors in the Academic Center, Milas Hall, and the Campus Center. We recognize the need to have a small number of bathrooms labelled “Men” and “Women” for religious purposes and legal compliance, but gender-neutral bathrooms should be the default.
      2. Olin will guarantee allocation of student emergency funds towards hormones and/or gender-affirming actions (from surgery to buying binders and other affirming resources) for trans students.
    3. Social and Cultural Resources
      1. Pronouns will be included by default in all publications, including for faculty and staff. This applies to the website and marketing materials.
      2. Olin will allocate a portion of the StAR budget for LGBT-themed inclusion events and resources to increase awareness of the large LGBT presence on campus and show institutional support.
      3. The administration will encourage students to experiment freely with gender identity on campus, with no repercussions for things such as (but not limited to) changing physical gender presentation, requesting “trial” names or pronouns, or other such things.
      4. All departments at Olin will allow students to preemptively access all information about them that could be seen by families, friends, or other groups who may not know things such as that student’s chosen name or preferred pronouns. This is crucial to preserve the safety of students who are not “out” as their true gender.
      5. Businesses who wish to recruit Olin students, including at career fairs or recruitment events, will be informed of Olin’s stance on transphobia and must be screened to avoid allowing students to be harassed by prospective employers.
  6. Respond promptly to these demands. We also expect complete cessation of retaliation against us for submitting reports or describing our experiences. We ask for a substantive response within two weeks.

    Back to Overview

    1. Olin will deliver quick responses to student demands so we can begin to heal. We expect a response within 2 weeks, which should be ample time to begin making Olin safe for us.
      • On October 2, 2019, President Richard Miller sent an email with subject, "A Call to Action on Trans Rights at Olin" to all students, faculty and staff at Olin. We are grateful for his prompt, kind, direct and articulate response, and we'll begin meeting with members of Olin's administration soon. Other members of StAR and the faculty have also reached out with offers of collaboration, which we appreciate and plan to support. We hope we can serve as partners in the changes Olin needs to make. The work is only beginning.
      • On October 3, 2019, the Faculty of Olin College released an open letter "publicly affirm[ing] that hatred has no place at Olin; transphobia has no place at Olin; harassment and sexual assault have no place at Olin." We are greatful for the courage they show in standing with us.
    2. Should these terms be violated, we reserve the right to publicly hold the school accountable, though we truly hope the outcome of this letter is productive communication. We have carefully documented instances of retaliation by Olin and specific administrators, and we will not hesitate to go public if those situations continue. We also expect Olin to investigate those claims through the Title IX process, which allows students to submit reports against administrators/institutions.
